FEW WILL BE SAVED

Few Will Be Saved

“O God! If you have not deceived us; if all You have told us with regard to the road to eternal life shall be strictly fulfilled; if the number of those who must perish shall not influence You to abate from the severity of Your laws, what will become of that immense multitude of creatures which every hour disappears from the face of the earth? Where are our friends, our relations who have gone before us? And what is their lot in the eternal regions of the dead? What shall we ourselves become” Jean Baptiste Massilon

Luke 13:24

Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.

We all say that we believe that Jesus is the Son of God. We have confessed with our mouths and believed in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead. We are therefore “saved”

It is easy to accept a few basic facts about the gospel and not be saved at all. I wonder if we believe in every single word that Christ uttered. Do we really believe that only few will enter into the Kingdom of God?

Every wise student does not hesitate to revise for exams with the help of past exams papers to find out how the exams are set. If we are intelligent students, let history teach us how God has been perfoming the work of Salvation in the past years, hoping that we believe that God is immutable – He is the same Yesterday, Today and forever.

“The family of Noah alone was saved at the time of the flood. Abraham was chosen from among men to be the sole depository of the covenant with God. Joshua and Caleb were the only two of the six hundred thousand Hebrews who saw the land of promise. Job was the only upright man in the land of Uz, and similarly Lot in Sodom” Jean Baptiste Massilon

I admit that God saved these people by grace. I believe that no one is saved because of his righteous acts. If they have done anything good, then it is the grace of God that enables them to do it. IICor 3:5-6 Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from the Lord who has also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit, for the letter kills but the Spirit gives life”

The bible is also very clear that these people walked in the ways of the Lord. They pleased Him in all that they did. They were a holy people. They did not conform themselves the patterns of this world.

My fear is that in the world today there are very, very, very, extremely few people who are not conformed in the patterns of this world. I do not see people who hate the world in the Church Today. We all say we love Jesus, but we don’t hate the world. We want to serve Him and money as well. We do not live in the world as those that did not belong to it. I see “Christians” everywhere keeping their treasures on earth. I see Christians driving very expensive cars while we live in the midst of very poor people. I see professors of faith leaving in bungalows while many people die of hunger. I see us dressing eating like Kings while just a Kilometer from where we live there are those who have no clothing and food. Our bank accounts are full of what we call savings, yet people die of diseases which we could help treat by providing medical care. To make matter worse, I hear “preachers” preaching that you if you believe in God you will not settle for a “Vitz” but you will drive Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Range Rover and the like. Is this not loving the world? “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If any man loves the world the love of the Father is not in Him” Is this quote from the Bible? Is it the Bible we say is infallible, inerrant, inspired and authoritative?

The forerunner of Christ said “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same” Our wardrobes are full of clothes and not just two pairs. Many of us have more than four pairs of shoes while the poor in Kibera, Korogocho, Mathare, Mukuru kwa Jenga etc walk barefoot. – I see we truly believe in the words of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Now Today, if you say that you do not kiss your girlfriend everybody will term you legalistic. The world and by this I mean the people in the Church tell us you cannot be romantic if you don’t invite your girlfriend for a movie in your room. They say that if you don’t hold her waist once in while she will think that are not romantic. “It is a guy’s natural instinct to want to touch a waist. That’s where our hips are and it’s part of our femininity, our curves, our “child bearing hips”. it just means he’s a real man and appreciates a woman’s beautiful hips. I wish my fiance did that, sounds like a turn on and romantic. It’s the little things like that us women like. Just like how you grab his arm, because there strong and manly and that attracts us” So if you don’t you are not a real man. I now see what defines a real man. I am afraid that many professing Christians believe that cuddling, fore playing and making out with your unmarried partner is not a sin. Having sex is.

Sixty years ago if a woman was found at the beach in a bikini, she would be taken to the doctor to be examined and if found to be mentally sober she would be arrested by the secular authorities. Now that which was abhorred and considered very immoral by the world is entertained in the Christian fraternity today. Still many of us say that we believe the Christ as in this words “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Yes we believe that all fornicators will not inherit the Kingdom of God – except me one will say because I have prayed the sinners prayers, because I have assurance of Salvation.

1 Timothy 2:9

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array

Now this bible passage should be chopped off from the Scriptures because it does not apply to the 21st Century Christians. In fact I wonder why it is in the new Testament. Every time I walk in Church, I am perplexed to see the manner in which ladies are dressed. Is not startling to see ladies coming in Church with half of their chests out? – These are not mothers who are breastfeeding so doing that for convenience purposes! Many are young ladies, I am afraid some mothers also. Some come to Church with clothes that frame every part of their body, so that we almost see everything. I wonder whats the point of dressing then. If you talk about it, they say that you must learn to control yourself. You have an evil mind. Sure, that would be a good argument in a night club, but not in Church. I agree with what Charo Washer says “If your clothe is a frame for your face from which the glory of God radiates, then it is pleasing and brings glory to God, but if your clothe is a frame for your body, then it is sensual and displeasing to God.

Jesus said that no thief will inherit the Kingdom of God.The majority of Christians especially here in Kenya still pirate movies. I see many of us buying pirated DVDs in the streets. Many of us still use pirated software in our computers. We have so many songs in our gadgets that we have not acquired legally. Since they are gospel movies and songs, it is not infringing someone else’ copyrights. It is not stealing at all. I know that Windows 7 professional goes for KES 12,000 but because I am using it for Christian ministry, God understands. After all many people are being converted through that ministry. Who doesn’t do it any way? Even my Pastor does it.

Do we really believe that they way is narrow? This is not for non-Christians. This is for professing Christians. I want to remind us that the way is narrow and the gate is also narrow.

“Follow the history of the just from age to age, and see if Lot conformed himself to the habits of Sodom, or if nothing distinguished him from the other inhabitants; if Abraham lived like the rest of his age; if Job resembled the other princes of his nation; if Esther conducted herself in the court of Ahasuerus like the other women of that prince, if many widows in Israel resembled Judith;… See if in those happy days, when Christians were all saints, they did not shine like stars in the midst of angels and men by the singularity of their lives and manners. See if the pagans did not reproach them for their retirement, and their shunning of all public theaters, places, and pleasures.” Jean Baptiste Massillon.

We live just like the world does. We use the world as every other person does, we dress like the world yet we claim that we are different. “If there is nothing in my life and conversation that shows me to be different from Jews and Heathens; if I use the world, and worldly enjoyments, as the generality of people now do, and in all ages have done; why should I think that I am amongst those few who are walking in the narrow way to Heaven? – William Law

“The salvation of our souls is set forth in Scripture as a thing of difficulty, that requires all our diligence, that is to be worked out with fear and trembling. [Phil. 2. 12] We are told, that “strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, that leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” [Matt. vii. 14] That “many are called, but few are chosen.” [Matt. 22. 14] And that many will miss of their salvation, who seem to have taken some pains to obtain it: as in these words, “Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” [Luke 13. 24]” William Law.

I believe that we are saved by grace. Our righteousness is filthy rags to Him. Ephesians 2 – For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9 not by works,so that no one can boast.

- But most of us would want it end there, we must continue!

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

I believe that if we are genuinely born again, good works will follow. We will live lives that please God. We will walk in newness of life. We shall be new creatures and the old will go and they new will come.

After saying such things many ask, what then is the grace of God therefore? Let me join the Apostle Paul in giving you an answer – Romans 6. What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin;how can we live in it any longer?

Apostle Jude says – “For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.”

Now the Apostle Paul defines for us grace:

Titus 2:11- For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

If I understand the grace of God well, then the only prove that I have been a partaker of it is that I will live a self-controlled, upright and godly life. How is it then that we keep shouting “Grace” yet we live in moral decadence?

“I wish not to make you generally conclude that few will be saved, but to bring you to ask yourselves if, living as you live, you can hope to be saved” Jean Baptist Massillon.

Examine yourself in the light of Scriptures to see whether you are in the faith.
